Some Theories

I can't really make a strong argument for any of these, but it's all I got.

  • A street worker is leaving his "signature" when he is on the crew to repave a street, much like signing your name in wet sidewalk pavement.
  • They are some kind of route marker for a route, where the directional-orientation and numbers tell you how many blocks to go and where to turn in order find the next set.
  • Some kind of dorky geocaching thing.
  • An advertisement for Domino's Pizza
  • stupid conceptual artwork.

  1. Probably some street art. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some correlation between the numbers on the dominos, their orientation, and their place on the street and/or coordinates on a map. Or like you mentioned the map or route marking. It could also just be someone wanting to make some street art, having a bag of dominoes and just placing them around because they were there, cheap, durable and they wanted to do something.

It'd be interesting if, like toynbee tiles, they were covered in something and worn away to eventually be revealed. If they were fit into a hole, they were probably just adhered with some sort of plumbing or flooring adhesive like the ODB tiles in carondelet.

Most street art is pretty non conceptual, and I doubt this has any concept beyond some sort of number system. What street art is usually about is getting the viewers attention and making you think and or interact with or about it. In this case, these have clearly succeeded to some extent.

  2. http://letterboxing.org/index.php started before sattelites, depends on following clues from known locations. Try searching for the locations on the site for clues. I.E. Direction / distance from a marker, or some kind of name to find.
